Question Filter won't work...

Maybe I'm just not having good luck with this kind of filter because this is my second filter in the past year that has stopped working. The filter I have is the Tetra Whisper in tank filter up to 3g.
The tube still seems to be pulling water up but no water comes out the top.... It's basically doing nothing other than wasting my electricity. This is the second filter of the same kind in the past year!!!

Is there some care thing that I'm missing for this thing? Or am I crazy?

Is yours the Tetra 3i sponge/bubble filter?

Even when the 3i is working as designed, it's a very poor design and does little to filter your water. And it's lousy as biomedia because water flows only over the top 25% of the filter.

The pumps are OK, pretty quiet. I use the small Hydor in my 3g tanks. There are cheaper ones on Amazon.

My computer is acting up so I can't get an URL to you right now. Sorry.

The 3i has to be submerged to the bottom of the output lip. Sometimes the hair-line gap the bubbles come out of is a little tight too.

It's worse than that. The riser tube exits about 1/2 inch from the top which misses most of the cartridge. I modified mine so all of the media gets bathed. That's a pain. I'd still rather use a good sponge filter.

This one's bigger than it looks. Better for a 10g

Same but smaller

Here's what I use in my 2.5gals. Have to cut an inch off the riser tube. But plenty of foam for bacteria.

All these are waaayyy better than the Tetra 3i. You can use your current air-pumps. And there are pages more on Amazon. So cheap you can't afford to make your own.
