How do I avoid sucking up my ghost shrimp in the gravel vac?

Ok, I bought some ghost shrimp last week and they were way smaller than I expected so I put them in their own small tank for a while But yesterday I had to swap my female betta's and my male betta's tanks while I try to get my male betta to stop chomping on his fins. So now my female betta is in the 5 gallon. I decided to put one of the shrimp in there with her (I cannot find the other one in their small tank. I don't know if it died or is maybe hiding very well and molting). Anyway, I put him in the 5 gallon, and it took me about 10 minutes before I saw where he went. Then he moved and after that I haven't seen him since. What's the fun of having ghost shrimp if they're too small and camouflaged to even see them? That brings me to my main question- how do I avoid sucking my shrimp up when I clean the gravel- I can't even see him unless he's swimming around!
