tank placement

I've seen that a lot of people keep their betta tanks in living rooms or near kitchens. I'm thinking of putting a 3 gallon in the living room, on a small table. It is near a window, so would get natural light, but absolutely no direct sun. My main concerns are that at night, a lamp is always left on in the living room, maybe 10 feet away from the table where the fish would be. So at night, it wouldn't be completely dark... Is that a must, or will it be okay. Also, my dad smokes, but he has an air purifier on his table so some of the smoke goes in. Would being in a room with smoke affect the fish? I'm thinking that it will...

Sounds good but a gallon of water weighs eight pounds and that is not including decorations.

Are you concerned about the table holding it? It's a good sized table actually, made of thick wood. It's like a nightstand table. It's not a dining room table, or a coffee table, so I didn't know how else to describe it.

I think the table would be fine...I have one of my tanks on a microwave cart. I would be concerned about it being near a window, just because of the possibility of temperature fluctuations hot/cold, and drafts. I don't think the light would bother the fish at night, as long as it is not really shining in their tank. My living room is dark at night. I only use a nightlight in the kitchen.

Yeah, the window is drafty, but wouldn't a heater prevent fluctuations in the winter. Also, the living room has a wood stove in it, so it will be the warmest in the house in the winter.
