New giant sick betta

Hello - I've never posted before and thought I'd just check in about my new guy. He's a giant betta, young (less than a year), and gorgeous. He's been christened Megatron. I've had him for about 5weeks and about two wks ago he started losing his appetite and became very lethargic. And lo and behold he pine coned today, poor thing. I've done another water change and dosed him w Epsom salts. He hasn't eaten in a while...anything extra I can do? Thanks in advance!

For 4 gall you need to do weekly water changes. If you have filter then you can do 50% weekly with gravel vacuum and filter wash. If you don't have filter you need to do 50% weekly and 100% water changes every other week.

He is pine coning and bloated. My questions did you see his poo? Sometimes they can have raised scales due to bloating and bloating can be due to internal parasites. If his poop white, clear stringy he might have internal parasites.
Or bloating can be due to fluid accumulation in his body.

I would lower the water in his tank or put him in the small container so it will be easier for him to swim to the top. I would also Pre mix 3tsp of the Epsom salt in one gallon jug or in the cup for the right dosage you need to do 100% daily water changes . Epsom salt very mild so don't worry to stress him out. Keep adding stress coat. If you have IAL you can add to his water.
Make sure you introduce him slowly to the new water. Just keep adding new water to his original water a little bit and let him stay for about 5 min. Do it a few times . This way he will get used to new chemistry/temperature.

Like you wrote you don't need filter right now and less water movement is better for him right now.

Sorry :( I think all you can do now just make him comfortable. I think it good idea epsom salt though. Not sure if he will survive though. Usually if it just dropsy symptoms you might help if you treat it from the first day symptoms onset. But in you situation i am afraid too late. But you doing right think trying to save him. Betta sometimes can surprise you.

I haven't seen any poop that I know was his...he could be very constipated by now since I haven't been feeding him pellets. Bummer! I've never had this problem before but maybe his system is more sensitive. I really hope he makes it. Thanks for your feedback guys - I will keep you posted.
