A good starter tank?

My betta is currently in a one-gallon plastic bowl. I'd really like to put him in a 3-5 gallon tank (I'm in a college dorm room, restrictions will not allow anything larger than 5 gallons). I'm also a beginner when it comes to fish care, so I would want something easy to manage. Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Thanks. :)

Thanks for your input! :)
ChoclateBetta, do you by chance know anything about gravel types?

Until today I've been using coloured aquarium gravel, but I just switched over to smoother river pebble. Think this was a sensible choice?

Duly noted! I'll keep an eye on Clifford and see how he does with it over the week. I just cleaned his bowl about an hour ago, replacing the gravel. If he shows any problems, I'll switch back. Thank you!

Yeah, she's a miniature greyhound! Very fast and hard to catch when she gets excited...
