a bacteria die off in the sand will cause a large ammonia spike.
it will also give you hard water and raise ph... none of which are great for the fish. they will adapt... but.... their fins might curl and they wont heal injured fins as quickly... if at all
edit: I just read ur link. Cichlids unlike bettas prefer hard water an high PH... that's why it worked for rhe cichlid guy.
bettas on the oter hand prefer a low PH and softwater....
