Ick questions

Hello,

I have never dealt with a fish with ick before. I have a new guy and he appears to have some white dots (they do look salt-like) on the top of his head. They don't appear anywhere else. When ick starts, does it tend to show up in one place? He's eating and responding fine for the most part, although he's always been pretty mellow, just resting on the top. This morning he's been hanging out on the bottom, though.

I'm about to go to class, but I can put up a photo later.

Ick is the most annoying thing ever in my opinion. Why does it exist!

Once you get it, you have to treat the whole tank since it is basically a parasite and contaminates everything in your tank.

water temperatures of 80-83 degrees + AQ salt cause the parasites to fall off, and when they do you have to do a water change to keep them from breeding and just continue on with attacking your fish.

Medicine kills the young ick free floating but the medicine kills some fish and invertebrates too.

Here's a photo of him... couldn't capture what I saw earlier. Now I fear velvet on his head... Anyone had experience with Velvet? Does it look like this?
