Pantyhose could work. Put it tight over the top so it can still let in plenty of air.

you can place platic wrap over the top...
if your bowl is 1.7 gallon, that is fine.

I do recommend you to take out half the gravel, so you have more water...

I am sorry if i will be confusing you further. but a 50% water change half weekly and 100% + gravel vacuum at the end of the week is a minimum requirement to keep your fish alive :)

goodluck!

That looks like it might be the same wine glass that I have and it holds about 2 gallons - so if you want to use it - it's OK but bigger is better. I used a Hagen mini elite 25 watt heater. I like them because they are alot shorter then most other heaters and will fit in smaller tanks.

you should have some kind of water conditioner - alot of people like PRIME. I like Stress Coat. There are alot of others out there was well.

Also - a small box of Aquarium salt and plain epsom salt may come in handy. Almost all illnesses that arise will require the use of either Aquarium or Epsom salt. it is also good to have a medication like FURAN 2 or TRIPLE SULFA on hand. You may never need them but if he happens to get some of the fast moving bacterial infections that can kill in hours - its best to have one of these on hand. There are other meds but those two are easiest to find in shops

Yes, I have that one for my 2.5 and my 5 gallon. It works well. I like that it is adjustable.
