Sand vs Gravel?

What are the benefits of having sand instead of gravel? I currently have a 10g filtered & heated tank with a small water wisteria plant, and a new java fern. There's one male betta in there & a zebra snail. :) Thanks!

Less crud settles "into" sand the way it can with gravel.. everything sits on top making it easier to vacuum out. I think sand also looks nicer, but obviously opinions vary on that :)

I'm getting sand for my sorority. It can't hurt. However, if your sand is deep, it may develop gas bubbles that are toxic. As long as it's thin, no bubbles. :D

I personally like black gravel. I vacuum it every other week in my cycled tank and every three days in the two uncycled ones. I also suck any noticable stuff up through a turkey baster. I love the look of the black gravel although I've never tried sand. Someday when I set up an NPT I guess I'll have to get used to it.

I really want to try the sand, but I just moved my fish into his 10g last night. I guess I'm going to have to suck it up & make the change probably some time next week.. I love the way sand looks & I'm hoping to get a lot more live plants. I think some of the plastic plants I had tore his fins. That's a whole other thread though. :( How much sand would I need? I had no idea about the gas bubbles!!!
