Also, I heard that amino chips or something can take ammonia out of water. Some people said that they prepared the water early and ran a filter with the chips in it for a day to remove ammonia from tap water. Is this something I should try to help things long term?

That's "ammo" chips; short for ammonia. I don't know anything about them nor anyone who recommends them.

Your water change will be more effective if you change out 50% at least.

Put the Prime into the refill water just before you refill. It works instantly.
