I have this in my tetra whisper filter, and also a similar one in my aqua tech HOB filter. What are they for? Is it the same as adding filter foam to the filter for more surface area for BB to grow on?

Ok, thanks! I was just wondering because the one in my HOB filter is starting to look pretty ragged and I was thinking of adding some filter foam to help replace it.
