Beta fish getting stuck in the filter

I recently moved my male betta fish from a 1 gallon fishbowl to a 10 gallon aquarium. When I added a filter earlier today, the betta fish seemed quite annoyed at the current, but also seemed to hang out around the filter. The betta briefly got stuck on the intake holes of the of the filter. Fortunately, I don't think it suffered permanent damage. I am, or rather, was, using a Tetra Whisper 10i filter.

Is there a way to stop the betta from getting stuck in the filter, and does this happen with other fish species or floating plants?

I hate that filter! You can put pantyhose over the intake and also baffle the outflow with a sponge :)

Thanks. Is there a better filter that won't harm/annoy betta fish? I also have a large floating plant in the tank, which could also potentially get caught in the filter.

For fish safety and comfort (plants too, I'm sure), and for helping to maintain a stable cycle, a lot of keepers swear by sponge filters...the kind that use an air pump. These are among the best:
