How many of you come across ignorant Betta keepers of Bettas in .5 gallon "tanks" and reciting myths please share stories.

Today I saw a mother and 2 kids with 2 small bowls and 2 bettas waiting to pay in petco

Honestly I used to be one of those people when I was younger. Keeping my bettas in bowls and not cleaning them out...ever.

I've changed of course.


I also have a friend who is terrible with bettas. One day she told me her betta died from moving him into a new tank.
I said
"Was the water cold?"
"Of course!"
"But I told you that bettas need warmer water...."

And to think I got her into bettas. D:

A lot of "bad care" can be attributed to pet stores not being "up to date" on what is considered humane living conditions. I also found this to be true with hamsters where the standard cage is much smaller in sq inch-age than is considered adequate (360sq/in btw). Wal-Mart had several sub 1-gallon tanks for bettas and I even have mine in a 1 gallon but that is before I knew that perhaps at least a 2-2.5 is what is now considered adequate. But with the internet being as accessible as it is now, there is little excuse not to at least look up this information.

I used to do that too.. put them in little bowls.
I feel so bad now!
Like I am so mad at myself for doing that ugh.

All over tumblr people post pictures of their betta in like .25 gallon vases with bamboo taking up all the space in the vase. Some of them are even smaller with gems filling up half of the space, its so sad

Most Betta keepers keep them in bowls many of us here have learned bowls are bad.

april of this year did i move my betta out of his .5 gal triangle bowl(that i never cleaned) that he had been in since november and put him in his own 2.5 gal. ive never seen such a change in a fish.

ive only seen it once in walmart and i said something sarcastic loud enough for them to hear because i was with my fiance. i have seen alot of people buy bettas wheere i get mine but never see them pick their tank. my first betta i bought i put him in a 1.5 one of those tetra 1.5 cube tank kit thing, he had no heater luckily once i set it all up and watched him for a bit i thought it was sad and he needed more room and i felt his water and it was too cold so he was only in that set up for 24 hours. then next day i brought back the tetra cube and bought a 5 gallon tank for him and a heater and he has been in it since.
