Need Help NOW

I just changed my Betta's water after noticing something was wrong with the heater. The water was fairly cool and he wasn't swimming around much. I did a 100% water change on my 4.5 gallon tank. I did feed him a couple hours before the change. I wouldn't of done it had i remembered at the time. Anyway he's now floating just above the bottom of the tank and his gills are moving a lot more than usual. Any ideas?

What is the current temp of the water?

He could have been a little shocked by a sudden change of water temperature, or stressed by change in the parameters.

EDITED: Forgot to add the word temperature after the word water.

Now it's 77. I didn't think going from cool to warm water would really shock him. i thought only the opposite would affect them.

actually, going from cool to warm water can shock a fish, like you or me going from snow to a desert-yes that large of a change.

77 isnt that bad, 80 is perfect. Any sign of disease or ammonia poisoning?

No signs of any diseases. It seemed to be a reaction to the water change.

Jack (my fish) seems to be swimming higher but he still is hangin around the bottom a bit. I'm not sure but I think the light being on in the room he's in is bothering him right now. He swims to the top and all around in the dark.

More than like it was just the water, and now that he is use to it he is becoming more active. If possible next time you do a water change take a cup or bowl of water out of the tank and put the fish in it then Fill the tank and let it sit for an hour or so to get to the right temp, Also if possible place the fish in the bowl/cup in the water to get him use to it!

I did put him in a cup and let him get acclimated to the water. The only thing I did differently was feed him a couple hours before changing the water and change the heater.

Jack is fine now it seems. Thanks to everyone who posted a reply. You kept me from completely freaking out.
