tap water or spring water?

With my last betta fish Azul, I always used spring water. Now, Azul has passed away and I'm getting ready to get a new fish. I've heard that tap water can be ok as long as you use conditioner. Is this true? Do you use tap water or spring water in your tank?

I always use tap water with a conditioner (Prime). It's perfectly fine to use and it is cheaper than buying lots of jugs of spring water. Not mention that spring water can come from questionable sources, that "spring water" we pay for sometimes is tap water anyway.

I use tap water conditioned with Prime, always have.

Actually tap is generally preferred, and better, then spring water. Not only is it far less expensive, but often times spring water doesn't have a lot of the necessarily minerals and whatnot that fish need. I've also recently heard as well that spring water can be rather iffy...

That "spring water" is not good for bettas because it doesn't contain the needed amount of minerals.

Yeah...cost was one of the reasons I wanted to switch. I have stess coat water conditioner so I think I'll give it a try

Tap water is fine, just use water conditioner on it before adding to your tank :)

Where I am we have VERY hard water (TDS on my tap is about 340, my GH is off the scale) and it hasn't been a problem for my fish.

I would caution against spring water because you don't know what is in it.. some companies add things to it, and sometimes it is little more than filtered tap water (and the method of filtering varies). Distilled water is fine if you add a mineral replacer, but unless there is a reason for you NOT to use tap water, you can just use treated tap water and don't worry much about it :)

I've always been a little skeptical of that stress coat with water conditioner stuff.....whenever I looked at it, it just didn't look like a very good conditioner. I would highly suggest picking up a bottle of Prime....its the best stuff out there as far as I know, takes and locks just about everything possibly harmful in your tap water. Its super concentrated, just a few drops can treat several gallons, so its quite economical and really not all that expensive to begin with.

Agreed, prime is a bargain... at 2 drops a gallon even the small $6 bottle will last a very long time with small tanks :)
