Horizontal heater and water change?

I have done my first 2 water changes with my new heater,i have my heater at a slight angle. When i did the water change about half of the heater is exposed,i unplugged the heater and waited about 10 minutes before removing the water, and after adding new water i waited about 15 minutes before plugging the heater back in, is this okay or is this wrong.I just don't want to damage the heater or have it crack on me, i am a newb this is my first time using a heater.Do you have a certain routine when doing your water changes.

unless the room temperature is really really cold.. you usually dont need to wait ten mins...another idea is to unplug it and let it lie on the substrate while you do you WC.

I take mine straight out after unplugging.

Lower wattage heaters are really unlikely to have any overheating issues the way that larger (100+ watts) can. I would just unplug it before you start emptying and plug it back in when you are done refilling - less chance that you'd forget to plug it back in later if you waited.
