In my experiance the dog is usually a direct reflection of their owner, therefore I'd say the pit's owner was overly aggressive.
Also in my experiance all you need to do is give the charging dog a hard stare right in the eyes, not just stare but feel it like the ready to fight anger you would feel in a fight, and they usually back down. And if it does attack you pop it in the snout or it will leave you bloody.
People give me the most disgusted looks when Toad doesn't want to be their dog's friend :( He's 8 and has always been aggressive, but up until now I've just tried my best to keep him away from other dogs (yeah, bad tactic!). A few weeks ago, though, I took him hiking and wasn't at the park for all of five minutes before an off-leash dog bounded up the trail and wanted to say "Hi". She was a little border collie named Kirby, and I was afraid Toad would really hurt her if she got too close. I told her owner that he isn't friendly with other dogs, which scared the owner, who scared Kirby, and when he tried to catch her, she ran toward me. She didn't get close enough for them to fight, but I still felt bad about it.
The owners of the dog that ran after Toad yesterday are... not my favorite people. They've told me before that I shouldn't walk down my own road because they have pit bulls o.O The dog is probably nicer than they are, and I think she was really just telling Toad to get away from her yard, because if she wanted to hurt him, she would have. But, even if she doesn't want to ~hurt~ anyone, it's still dangerous for her to run into the road! She could have been hit by a car, or run up to someone who would hurt her.
It's just not that hard to keep a leash on your dog, and I don't understand why people have such difficulty doing it. It's as much for the safety of the dog on the leash as it is for everyone else.
Wow that is annoying!
People in my neighborhood let their dogs run loose.
Like Ive captured this person's little dog (not sure of breed, maybe a shih tzu mix?)at least 3 times and brought it back. They also have 2 other little dogs who I am unable to catch.
One time I went to get one of them and it bit me. So I just said F it, and left.
People are just so irresponsible it is... UGH,
I had an old neighbor who had a dog she let run loose and I brought it home to her, and told her how he almost got hit by a car. She said she let him out on purpose.
Of course the next day he was running loose again.
A few years ago my sister, her friend and i were walking, and this dog just approached us, about 5 feet away and started barking. We moved an inch and he'd get a foot closer. We were hiding behind our bikes, but were afraid to take off because he probably would get to us before we were able to get away. We werent entirely positive that he was agressive but it was scary, so we were yelling our lungs out at the person;s house hoping they'd come get their dog, but nobody came. So we had to call my dad and he scared the dog off so we could get away.
Lucky for the owner, animal control was closed that day.
Majority of pit bulls these days that are dog aggressive, are agressive due to lack of socialization.
Very rarely do you find one that is genetically dog aggressive, and in that case it is directly from close fighting lines. Due to dog fighting being illegal now, less and less are fought and it has nearly been bred out of them.
As for human agression, that is always due to lack of socializtion OR there are people who purposefully make them human agressive.
Pitties were bred to be human friendly so that the people fighting them would not be hurt. They were once known as america's family dog until rotten humans tainted their reputation.
That lady is this close to having her pitbull seized and euthanized. Even if it's harmless, like that dog in Ireland. Ugh, I hate stories like this.
My dog was 30 lbs at his most muscular (always a muscly lean dog bc we exercised him) and he was also dog aggressive due to never being socialised properly and people would often let their dogs/children just come towards him bc he was small. He was a terrier so he was quick and he did bite some kids before. People are stupid. Plain stupid.
Okay, i have four dogs of my own. They are all pretty tolerant of other dogs except for one. She will start snarling if any dog other than her pack comes within a ten foot range of her. She's 100% rough collie and was attacked as a puppy by one of the guys dogs down the street. He was fighting pit bulls in his garage, she accidentally escaped and one of his dogs jumped the fence and ran after her. People get so offended when I tell them on walks that no, she does not like other dogs, and yes, she will get agressive toward them. I've even been told once that I should put her down. We have extremely heavy containment laws in my town, dog must be contained by a leash or some sort of fence.
Oh my god that's so sad. Was the guy fighting dogs arrested? I love bully breeds. I really have my heart set on adopting one when we move out of Newfoundland (since we don't plan on living here anyway)

Yeah, he was arrested. I'm not sure what happened to the dogs, unfortunately. I love pretty much any dog. We have one, he's a german shepherd mix that we adopted who is adorable. He came from a hoarding situation so he guards resources, but we almost have him believing that the food in his crate is his and we're not going to take it away.
