Question King Bettas

So just WTH are these monsters?

Are they betta splendens at all??? Perhaps a genetically modified version? Perhaps fed on growth hormones? All of the above?

When they first came out of petco everyone was asking questions about them but no one seemed to know for sure. Now that I'm back to raising bettas I was kinda curious as to what the verdict was...

(on a sidenote, they look badass....like a plakat out of hell!!)

Basically it's a PK with Giant mixed in, at least that's what I've heard. King is just a Petco name. Yes they are B. Splendens, just big ones.

There is controversy some say Giant gene for B.splendens some say B.pugnax B.splendens hybrid it would not be the first time they were hybridized like B.smarginia B.imbellis B.splenden hybrid is the domestic one and it makes sense for it to be B.pugnax hybrid.

Although a b.pugnax b.splenden mix wouldn't be able to happen since pugnax are mouth brooders.

I don't know for sure what they are but I have one and he's the best. Such a sweet personality. He's so big and timid but he's very engaging with me. (He hides from my husband.) Even recently he has started nibbling his frozen brine shrimp right off the spoon that I use to put them in the tank. He also loves to swim under the water coming off the filter. (No worries, it's very gentle.)

They do not sell well here they also need 10 miniumum which is different from the standard betta read they are less hrady and more aggressive too.

I'm having a hard time believing that these king bettas are b.splendens....I mean I've had male bettas that have lived for 3+ yrs and none of them have even come close to these things in size.
