There are hundreds of Betta species, some of which are still being discovered. The pet store Betta is properly called Betta splendens, which is the Latin name. It is easier to identify and find wild Betta species by using their proper names. Betta imbellis are beautiful and popular among wild type enthusiasts, for example. Wild type Betta species do not traditionally have bright colors or long fins, though there has been a noted tainting in the gene pool of wild Betta splendens (which are not naturally bright and long-finned in the wild) with domesticated Betta splendens that have bred with their wild counterparts after being released into Thai waters.
