Talking Ripley!

Hello from England, everyone!

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to Betta, but today I got my new boy, Ripley!

I've been trying to identify what kind of Betta he is, and even what colour he is.

His fins, in normal light, are a red-maroon colour, but in direct light he goes teal!

I'd say Veiltail, maybe multicolored?

That's a pretty good sized tear, you'll want to be sure to keep the water nice and warm and clean.

I don't think thats a tear, I think he's a double tail.

I'm fairly sure he's a doubletail, but the rest of this is a slightly educated novice guess lol

Teal cambodian Double Veil Tail

*shrugs* That's my best guess... I could be very wrong tho

First, Welcome to the Forum!

A double tail splits all the way to the body and the body is usually stocky. A Cambodian is a Betta with a white or cream body and darker fins. You boy is a bi-color. But, here's a really helpful link should I be wrong.

Hey! We all are as some point. We have a saying in the newspaper business: We all make mistakes; I print mine.

If nothing else... Give him a few weeks and if his tail becomes one, he's a veil tail. If not and it stays split, he's a double! What a beautiful and interesting boy nonetheless. :D

Ah! I never even considered it being a tear.

It should be okay as long as I keep him in good conditions right?
He's in a 24 litre filtered tank, with a heater and water temperature of 26C/78.8F and I am currently changing his water around 50% per day to keep ammonia levels down.

He has a couple of live plants in the tank with a moss ball too, and he seems active and fairly content, I made sure he was flaring okay with a mirror and he gets very excitable and flares well.

I have some ammonia remover for dosing into the tank, do you think I should use any medication to try and help regrow his tail, if it's torn? It doesn't seem like he has any fin rot from what I can see, there is a small "lump" of fin in between the two forks, but it doesn't look infected.

All the same, thanks for any advice, Ripley and I both appreciate it!

Ps. He doesn't seem very old, he's quite small from what I gather. The store had 4 betta in total, but the other 3 were all dark blue, which I was going to get until I saw him and I knew straight away that he was my fish (tear or not).
He has the tank to himself although I'd love to get him a snail or some kind of other friend, I really like assassin snails but obviously there's no point putting one of those in when there's nothing for it to feed on...

Yeah, he should heal fine as long as you keep his water conditions good, which it certainly sounds like you are. :) Just keep a close eye on him.

Congratulations! He's very cute.
