Feel the need to rant a bit here, so excuse me while I do so.
I had to go out at lunch time to get some water conditioner because I've run out and it's water change day today for the tanks in my office. Decided to go to PetSmart instead of my regular LFS, Big Al's, because Petsmart gets plant shipments on Thursday's and their valis is always a great price.
I had been at PetSmart three days ago for doggie treats, and at that time had looked at their bettas. There was a pathetic little guy in a cup, fin rot, skinny, pale, the whole 9 yards. BUT he swam a bit when he saw me, and I fell for him. Grabbed the cup, and thought I would point out to the manager working the fish department the poor condition of this particular betta - there were others there that needed help, but this poor guy was the worst.
Manager says to me, "We have a room in the back for sick fish where we take care of them. Thanks for pointing him out."
Me: "I'm going to take him home with me."
Manager: "I can't let you do that. It's our policy not to sell sick fish."
Obvs., I smelled BS but what could I do? He took the cup and that was that.
So - back in there today. I go to look at the bettas. They got some new ones yesterday that look pretty good. But who do I see? The same little guy I wanted to get on Tuesday, still in his crappy little cup, shoved in behind all the new fish.
I seriously wanted to flip a table. Grabbed the cup, grabbed the treats, brought the betta home with me. Will be calling the pet store this evening when the store manager is in and logging a complaint - seriously, when is it a good idea to LIE to your customers about store policy and sick fish, and then waiting until that customer has left and putting the same fish back out on the shelf? SO. ANGRY.
He's set-up for now in a little 1g critter keeper. I've ordered a mini-sponge filter for him, but in the meantime have an air stone to keep the water moving a bit. Water temp is at a balmy 80, and hopefully the little heater I have in there will keep it there. I stole some plants for him from Rollo's tank. When he gets better, I will upgrade him, but for now with daily water changes I think this will work best.
He spent the afternoon floating in his cup, acclimatizing by drip, and I've just added him to the tank about 30 minutes ago. He's already eaten 4 pellets - seriously just noshed them down like they were air, and he's been busy exploring his new little home. His color has already improved a bit, but his poor fins - some of them are just the rays! I have no idea what tail type he is - he was in a half-moon container, but I don't think so.
I don't know what to call him. Was thinking Finnian? Finnigan? Some type of fin name? Any suggestions appreciated!
