80-86. The 86 is an oops most of the time, but my fish have never suffered any ill effects from it. One tank is typically at 82, the other goes between 78-80.

I currently have mine at 82, but he is lying up against the heater so I'm wondering if he would like it if the whole tank was a little warmer. I just don't want it to be so high that it could harm him.

My CT, in a 10g, does that too but I think it's just his favorit place for some reason. Could be because its calm and darker because the light from the hood is less there, in my case. My VT doesn't do that in his 10g tank except on rare occasions.

The best IME is 76F-78F. Having the water warmer will make their lifespan shorter because they're growing so fast with all the heat. I say 80F as maximum if you want your Betta to live a little bit longer.

Interesting!! Thanks, that really helps a lot. Looks like I'm going to shop for an adjustable heater
