First Betta! Any Advice?

I just got a very blue Betta fish (the kind with the more droopy fins). He is currently residing in my 12 gallon heated (77-80 degrees) and filtered (has a Biowheel) tank along side my two Black Mollies, two Red Wag Platys and my two Peppered Cory Catfish. I made sure that the water is at proper levels before I got him.

Any Advice on health/feeding?

I've researched but any extra advice is very welcome

Thanks!
Tony

P.S. His name is Hurricane (after the guy in the Bob Dylan song)

If you feed and look after him like he was one of the platies he will be fine. Some people would tell you he's not OK in there but as long as you are not one of the people that think salt is good for everything, you will do well. The same healthy blend of foods you use for the platies will suit him to a T.

It will be fine. With water changes the salt will dilute pretty quickly anyway.

The reason i dislike using salt in FW tanks is that salt weakens the immune system when used too often. The salt helps fight off things like ich and fungus like you say, but the fish then does not need their immune system to develop on its own. It's sort of equivalent to a human being on constant antibiotics. It may stop them getting infections for a long time, but eventually their immune system becomes redundant.

Thank you for the suggestion Falina :)

I put very minute amounts, around half a teaspoon of rock salt, very negligibile if I may say.

Would that be ok?

I have read an article similar to what you were saying that's why I changed the amount I add everytime I do a WC. Thanks!
