Water change, betta acting weird?

I did a water change and now my betta is laying at the bottom breathing heavy, I used water conditioner and put a little bit of aquarium salt. I've been cutting back on his food because he looks a little bloated and only fed him two pellets today.

why did you add the salt if you dont mind me asking? and how much? bettas are sensitive to salt so you have to watch how much you use and it should only be used if your treating him for a reason

Change the water again, this time don't put any salt in it.

Heavy breathing is not a good sign.

as BettaQi said change water again dont add salt. no salt isnt really good. its good for treating some issues/illnesses but other than that prolonged use of salt can end up hurting the betta

yes it is, try to match the water temperature so you don't stress him out too badly.

I know now not to use salt, I figured it would prevent them from getting diseases and help their gill function and stuff like that.

clean water is the best thing for fish. salt can be used if your betta has ick, or fin rot. It can help reduce the effect of high nitrites in the water but if your water is clean you dont have to worry about that and that is where people think its good for gill function. i thought the same thing when i had my goldfish. i used to use salt with them frequently then stopped once i learned more
