Question on a sponge baffle?

If I used a sponge like aquaclear sponge inserts to baffle my intake would that inhibit the filters ability to pick up debris and waste?

I did that on mine and there doesn't seem to be any issues with it. I just rinse it off in old tank water every/every other water change to get most of the particulates out of it, and that pretty much keeps it from getting clogged up.
