I'm somewhat a newbie and I've used bleach a lot these past couple months without any losses on fish or plants, everything's gone swimmingly, at first I was afraid to use it but I was dealing with columnaris deaths in guppies and really didn't want to chance anything, been using it ever since.

Using bleach isn't going to kill your fish if you rinse it properly. Use a 10% bleach solution (1 cup of bleach, 9 cups of water) and just set the stuff in there. I don't let it soak or anything, just set it in there slosh it around and you're good. Rinse all the things very well and sit them outside for a day. When you go to use it, double dose on water conditioner and you'll be fine.
