Dividers and Aquarium Silicone

So, I'm putting a divider into my 5 gallon.

I've had it divided before, and that time, I just pushed a piece of plastic mesh down into the gravel and it stayed there. I cut the piece big and it kind of warped down the middle. Worked fine, but wasn't exactly attractive.

This time around, I want to use the same plastic mesh but more cut to size so it's neat and straight. This means I need something to hold it in place. I have aquarium silicone (in case of emergency), and am wondering: how difficult/easy is it to scrape off aquarium silicone if, down the road, I no longer want this tank divided?

Any other solutions?

Also, with regard to dividers, am I better off doing a double barrier as an extra precaution, or is it not necessary?

On smooth glass, you can use a razor blade scraper, & elbow grease.

As long as you don't use the corner of the blade you should be fine.
