Chemicals

A mistake a LOT of people normally make that kills their fish are using chemicals while cleaning their tanks.
NEVER use chemicals.
Chemicals can get into the gills of your fish. This causes infection, and swelling,so your fish can't breathe.
Some cleaners and soaps say "animal friendly".
Friendly for animals without gills more likely.
Always when cleaning use warm water. ( be careful! )
Help save your fish and others. Pass the word on!

I know someone who keeps her betta in a bowl and uses dish soap to clean it. Every time. Betta is over 2 years old now......

Some chemicals can be used when cleaning a tank that doesn't have fish in it. Bleach has a very short half life. A 10% bleach solution mixed with 90% water will clean a tank. This is particularly useful for those that buy used tanks. Just make sure you rinse really well, or better yet, wait a few days. Thus making this not a good method for weekly cleaning, but then, not sure why you would need to bleach very often.

For hard water, vinegar will take the spots right off!
