Feeding ghost shrimp for bettas

Hey all,

Does anyone feed their bettas ghost shrimp? In my (soon to be) 10 gallon sorority ( five lovely females), I think it would be fun to have ghost shrimp for the bettas to hunt and chow down on.


I would include LOTS of vegetation to give the shrimp a bit of hiding places and of course, help contain aggression in my 10 gallon sorority.

My main question is, when a ghost shrimp is eaten, killed, and left on the floor
1) do they leave a lot of ammonia?
2) are they nutritious for the bettas?
3) would the bettas go into a feeding frenzy?

Ghost shrimp might be a little large, sadly (found out the hard way) RCS are just the right size to become a betta meal.
answers:
#1= yes, any sizable organic item will produce ammonia.
#2= yes, has not been processed to death.
#3= yes/no/maybe, bettas on average do enjoy stalking.

I've found that though ghost shrimp are too large to eat in one go, a betta will shake it - like a dog with a toy - to tear bite-sized chunks off. Very cool to see.

If killed, the dead shrimp will attract everyone in the tank who notices. So what your bettas don't eat, the other shrimp will make quick work of. They're an excellent cleanup crew in that respect!

Man, the sad part is i'm torn between keeping
5 female bettas
or
2 dwarf puffers

in my 10 gallon tank. choices.....!

If you are going to use the above tank for female bettas it needs to be much more heavily planted/needs more hiding places. A sorority is a fragile balance even in a heavily planted tank. With as few places as you have now, it could quickly turn bad for all involved.

Dwarf puffers are cool, you will need to keep live pond snails as food for them. As they are a specialized feeder.
