Clamped fins?

Hello,

My betta Mori has had clamped fins for a while now, but I'm not sure why.. They aren't very severely clamped; only at the ends a little. I read that it can be caused by either a cold enviornment, stress, or high amonia levels. Are there more reasosn that I don't know of?

He has a heater that keeps his tank at the perfect temp ( around 75-83), however, when I first bought him he was in a small cup at Benfranklin and his fins were gloriously fine without a heater -.-

I believe that stress is unlikely because I treat him with care and give him attention. He has a good diet and on weekends I give him treats ... lucky him. When I take him out of his tank I use a cup instead of a net so that he goes in easy without his fins getting pushed around or his body.

I give his tank (it's a 1 1/2 gallon) a 50% water change once a week at the end of the week. I always check for uneaten food on the bottom/ watch when he eats. In general I make sure that there isn't anything unnaturally gross on the bottom. I'd be surprised to find out if ammonia was the culprit.

I used to have two plastic plants but one day they completely tore off one half of his longest fin . I took them out and almst immediatly his fin grew back, and looked amazing. it was full and fanned out.. but it soon became clamped again.

This weekend we're going to the pet store to get him a small live plant, as well as pick up some more supplies. So basically I need to know if there is anything else that would cause the fins to become clamped, any medicine or tank supplies that would help him in the future, and tips that you might know that I don't know.

(Mori is my second fish and I'm determiend to have him live longer than Samai, my last, who made it 1 and 1/2 years and died with severe fin rot that snuck up on us in one day :'( RIP.. I was very unprepared when it happened and I'd feel like a complete loser if something like that happened to Mori.)

An eight degree change is way too much for a Betta try and keep it at one temp.

Hard water can cause the tips of fins to curl. Do you know how hard your tapwater is?

Also you need more water changes and stable the temp.

I agree with Chocolate, a 75 - 83 degree range can highly stress a fish, especially if it is constantly fluctuating. A stable temp of 74 would be better than constantly changing water temps. This could be the cause of his clamped fins.

It could be fin rot so keep the temp at 80F and do more water changes.
