Thanks again for the advice!
Most people order it online, it's actually not too expensive. A lot of people located where the trees grow sell it on eBay.

You'll have to get it online usually. Ebay or aquabid usually has it. Alternatively, you could use oak leaves or rooibos tea. My betta's fins were torn for the longest time (tailbiting) and quickly started healing after I put rooibos tea in the tank. He loves it. Make sure the tea doesn't have any flavours or other additives if you use it, though. And if you decide to use oak leaves, make sure you rinse them in hot water first. Good luck. :)

It also might be excessive flaring.

I was going to say excessive flaring....between excess flaring and the resting on the filter intake my beautiful double tail is now a shredded tail. This may have already been said, I didnt read everyones responses, but I would keep the water extremely clean, this is when fin rot can become a problem and invade the damaged fins.

I noticed that my daughter likes to leave the fish tank light on to fall asleep at night - I turn it off before I go to bed but also noticed that he is much more agitated with it on at night - flaring all over the place - so he must see his reflection in the tank walls when there is no back lighting from the room or something. However, she/he has been doing that off/on all summer so maybe a change in his behavior to be flaring more... Did a 50% water change last night and have the IAL on order. Thanks again - love this site and the access to experience! :)

Good of you for turning the light on too much encourages algae and the fish don't like it.

I get mine at the grocery store. Just look at the ingredients list. If the only ingredient listed is rooibos tea, then you're good to go. They sometimes add vanilla and other flavours to the tea. Don't use that kind.

If it is fin nipping there might be a problem with care.
