How did you get your swords to grow stalks?

Good question. If I had to guess, I'd say it is probably because the plants were grown emersed. They're Argentine swords. I could be wrong though. I'm a total newbie to aquatic flora.

I keep argintines too they are healthy but no stalks I also keep amazon and water melon swords. Argintine can grow 18 inches tall.
