I can take a sample to petco and they will test it for free. Do you think the tetra safestart is even worth it or should I cycle a different way? The reviews all said it worked, but now I'm skeptical. Either way, I will always do weekly water changes now.

Many of the bacteria in there are already dead. Powdered might work.

That brand's bacteria supplement actually has the right bacteria. It will help with the cycle, but won't do it all for you.

Yes, but they live if used quickly. A scientist made a discovery about the bacteria and then Tetra bought it for millions of dollars. Lucky scientist.
