Back again, about Phy my VT >.< I had him in some AQ Salt after noticing the red on his cheek/gill? As well as to help with some badly torn fin from his tail-biting. But the red hasn't gone, and now there seems to be this sort of bronze. It's not dusty or anything, so I don't think it's velvet...but...I just don't know what it could be. Just coloration? I just want to be sure of what it is before treating.

Ammonia is less than .25, just did a 50% change today and it's reading at 0 for now. I feed him two crushed pellets and then one or two freeze dried blood worms about 8-10 hours apart in a day.

His behavior hasn't changed..not really. Still active, still eats, still gets excited to see me....sometimes he seems like he's sulking, but I have been paying a little less visual attention to him since I'm currently caring for a friend's female betta.

Anyways, here's the pic, and I really hope it's nothing.



His eye is white due to the flash of my camera...and now I'm looking at his tail and wondering if that's finrot. Again. -_-;

Also, the whitish scales around the gill area is actually more of a bronze color. Flash made the color wierd.

Okay, just eyeballed his tail with my flashlight and it's not finrot. There's even new white regrowth there. Just the flash...really really wierd.

Keep an eye on the bronze, it is probably nothing, but it never hurts to be sure. The red on the gills is like what my girl has on hers. It's completely natural for her, and as oldfishlady told me, you do generally want to see some red on the gills because it means they are getting enough oxygen. You just don't want to see bright red or inflammation.

Well it's not on the inner gill, the black part that shows when they flare. Just the scales on the outside part. I've never seen a blue betta go bronze, and it worries me...but I'll watch him. Thank you.

I always though the red in that area was caused by ammonia burns. I might be wrong though.

To me it looks like the same coloring on his fins. IMO, its just his coloring. I have a couple Bettas with the same type red just behind their gills, its on both sides & identical so I don't worry about it. Plus I test my water & know my ammonia levels are 0.

Hello, I have the same VT, and when I first got him, I noticed all the red coming out, I thought it was amonia burns too, but it is natural coloring that is in the redwash that is also in the finnage, my blue VT looks exactly like him..when the red first started showing..He is fine:)

Thanks for the replies guys. Tho I checked him when I got home and I'm seeing some rot I think, and his caudal is clamped. So, back to the slightly warm AQ salt treatments for Phy....
