For breeding? I'm afraid not....its a little more complicated then just putting a male and female together in the same tank. ;)
On top of your fishes regular homes, you need a whole separate setup for spawning, and then possibly a larger one for a grow out depending on the size of your spawning tank....filter(sponge I believe is the best), heater, plants(preferably live), the whole shabang Different methods use different sizes, and some even use large sterile tubs, but I believe its good for your first time to start out with at least 10 gallons.

Ahhh, I see. Gottcha.
Yes...sadly the conditions bettas are kept and sold in are really for the most part quite atrocious. I have seen a tad bit of improvement in certain places over the years, so I hope that is a sign that one day cold tiny plastic cups will be a thing of the past.

Sounds like an awesome plan! xD
Oh yeah, petstore females are definitely lacking, at least when it comes to good breeding stock. There are some lovely ones, but its next to impossible to find anything but VTs and CTs. Have you thought about ordering online? Ever checked out Aquabid.com?

Your betta is amazing. Interesting how it has a green sheen in one photo and a blue sheen in the other.

You dont need the same or similar color female if you dont care what the outcome of color is...but you should try for the same tail type as it will generally be a mess if you mix tails together!
He's a very pretty boy!!
Make sure you read the stickys on breeding if you are sure you want to do it! it takes a lot of time, and room

You could look for breeders in the US, the shipping is usually a little cheaper. You could also post on our Classifieds forum, there are a few breeders here that might have what you're looking for. ;)
I so agree, color isn't quite so important as form and tail type....you can always select siblings and work on color more in the next generation or two, but its important to start out with a good foundation with a nice clean form and matching tail type to cut down on the risk of deformities!
