Help! White spots on body, fins and gills!

My betta started getting several white dots after his first water change. When I got him (1 week ago) he didn't have anything wrong with him. After the first water change of the week, white spots occured.

What remedy should I use?

Are they fuzzy or shiny? Does it look like he was sprinkled with salt? A picture might help if you have one.
Also: Is your tank cycled?

It's somewhat fuzzy and he only has about 8 dots on him. Not "sprinkled" everywhere.

Sounds like it might be Ick, if you could post a picture that would be helpful. If it is Ick there are plenty of medicines out there for that.

A picture would be helpful.. It sounds like some sort of fungal infection. I would run over to your petstore and pick up some antifungal. My preference from experience is Kordon's Rid Ich Plus. Worked great and eradicated all of my Ich problems.

In addition to medicinal treatment, you need to be doing water changes weekly. A 5 gallon filtered tank should be cleaned at least 50% 1 week and the next a 100% change. This will help keep your ammonia down and prevent infections like these from happening. Sometimes there are inevitable but for the most part, water changes is the most effective.

Another supplement that I used for Ich, is aquarium salt treatment. I went to Petsmart and picked up a huge AQ salt box on sale a few weeks ago. It's good general treatment but don't use it for very long. 1tsp per gallon is a good start off. Good luck and I hope he gets better.

Maybe, I've never used Wal-Mart brand items (minus tetra, but I can find that at the fish store).

I'm always a bit scared of trying the Wal-Mart medicine, mostly because of how they treat their fish so I don't want to support their fish department. You may want to do research before using that.

Or do what I do sometimes, use the Wal-Mart medicine to treat the ill-treated bettas there, if it works for them maybe it will work on yours?
