Question Sleeping bettas?

Have your bettas ever experienced weird behavior when you wake them up? One of mine sleeps behind the filter and if I turn on the light and wake him up he acts very disoriented. Sometimes he swims weird, and other times he'll start to swim and just "drop" randomly, sort of like when someone is falling asleep sitting up and their head falls forward and jerks them back awake. I don't know if that makes sense.

My younger betta is never asleep when I approach the tank, haha.

Sometimes my girl gets startled awake if she wakes up and I'm there. She darts around like the boogey man is getting her. She hides behind her heater, then slowly peeks out to see what frightened her. Then she'll realize it's me and swim over to get fed.

sainthogan that's what most of my females do! I have bettas who sleep like rocks. you would have to cause an earthquake for them to wake up others may just go up to get air then sink back down to finish snoozing :)

The way my VT reacts when he's woken up if very frightening, though. If he acted that way all the time, I would be sure he was sick. :/ Haha. He likes giving me heart attacks.

The ones who sleep like rocks... Those ones give me heart attacks. I also had one who slept on a leaf of a plant, tilted partially onto his side. Another slept head down

I wonder how they have the need to not get air while sleeping.

Most of mine are wide awake when I get up.. except for Xander, my oldest one. He will sleep in his cave and when I go and turn on the light, he will stick his head out and look at me, then back up back into his cave and stay there for a while longer.

Mine sleeps behind the filter near the surface even though I have plants for him that reach the surface. I assume they probably need less air when they are not moving around...?

Kind of like our breathing gets heavier during physical activity. I don't know how accurate it is to compare fish to humans, haha, but I don't think they would drown themselves while sleeping :p

Also, I turn the lights on aroud noon but I still check on them at about 9am when I get up to go to school. Bahari is always awake when I check on him. DaBaDee is sleeping at 9am usually but he's awake by noon when I turn the lights on. I started using a very dim light when I check on him at 9, haha. Often times there are people awake playing video games on the computer around noon so that probably wakes him up before I turn on the light.
