Research is definitely the first step.

Do note that for the first time it will be more costly, if you are starting from scratch. I usually recommend collecting what you need over a larger time period so it does not seem so costly upfront.

Make sure to have thriving live food cultures for the fry. You may also want to try BBS (baby brine shrimp) which I have found is not as hard as some may think.

You may also want to make sure to have a growout tank for the fry (15-30 gallons should be fine) Depending on how many fry you end up with, you may need to move them or may not have to.

Make sure to condition both the male and female. This ensures they are healthy, active, well fed, and their immune system is up and running. Just throwing two fish together without properly feeding or caring for them can cause very bad stress, sickness, and sometimes death (if the male is weak, not feeling good, the female could kill him)

You also need A LOT of patience.
I've tried many different times, I've had a few successful spawns and eggs, but somehow I never have a good hatch. You need to be prepared for that to happen.

Patience is definitely needed. I have 15+ jarred while over 200 more are in one tank, and it takes time and patience to clean the tank and those jars :)
