Red face Air Pump

Hello all! I just have a quick question is an air pump necessary? I have a tank just like this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hawkeye-3-...-Pets/13448744. I had to leave for three days, and while I was away he contracted both fin rot and the Ich. So as part of his healing process I was doing a daily 100% water change and noticed that the air out end of the tube was slightly purple, so I decided just to take out the air pump entirely. He seams to be enjoying the extra space and the new calm water. I wonder if the purple colouration was what caused him to get Ich so quickly.

Ohhh okay Hmm, and that was not there before?

Ich is a parasite that can be caused by stress.

When did you clean the tank, before you left? Not that fin rot can only be present during qater quality - but just to rule out. :) It too can be caused by stress.

Do you have an adjustable valve on the air pump?

No,no valve and I changed his water an hour before I left because I knew I would be gone a while. The tube was completely clear when I got it with the tank.

Well, is it possible the flow was just too much for him? That could have caused stress.

That is a good idea. Nothing else had it? Did you get new gravel recently? Or a new fake plant?

Hmm that's odd. If you have an extra bowl or kitchen container kicking around (rinse well to make sure there is no soap residue) test the pump out in there. If you have new airline tubing use that. See if it appears again - and see if there is any color, reside, smell, sound, etc that appears in a few days.

It might be the pump itself.

What kind of pump do you have?
