Exclamation Betta Fish with Popeye - Day 6

Hi,
My betta fish got popeye 6 days ago. I immediately cleaned his bowl intensively and went to the pet store. I bought bettafix. I have been treating him with that accordingly for the past 6 days. He has not eaten in 6 days, but the popeye has reduced and is now hardly noticeable. He does seem to have a sore underneath he infected eye, which is red. He has been moving around more the past couple of days but does not eat at all. He also does this weird thing where he tries to swim in a circle but just cant manage it.

He is in a less then 1 gallon bowl, no heater, with a plastic plant and some stones at the bottom. He takes breaths of air often and is often floating near the top of the water.

I am worried that 6 days is getting too long for him not to eat. I am a college student and do not have much money to pay for expensive medicine. Am I using the right medicine? Is he getting better?

I have read about epsom salts and Maracyn 1 and 2. Is there anything I can do or is he getting better and I should just wait it out? Please help!

In less than one gallon with no heater? He probably has severe ammonia poisoning.. How often do you do water changes and what is the temperature of the bowl?

Also, betta fish has a component that can damage their labrynth organ and suffocate the fish. I would suggest not using it. Betta fix is about a $4 med and even the strongest good meds are only about $2-$3 beyond that.

I'm betting anything though that his problem is the size and temp of the water in the bowl. Also what conditioner do you use?

the only success stories I have heard with a bowl is when they do 100% water changes every few days. since its so small maybe you could use a lamp to warm it. Needs to be 78ish. I'd do a 100% water change and only add stress coat + and see how he does.
