Otis

Here is my male betta, Otis...

3 gallon tank, live plant on left, fake soft plant in middle.
50W heater purchased at Petco with automatic thermostat for 76-80 degrees.
Whisper filter

Those are not marks inside or outside tank or on live plant. Probably just overexposure of cell phone camera. :)

About 1 1/2 months into ownership...:)

The temp changes too much and 50 watts is too much for a 3 gallon.

Had a 7.5 watt and it was not doing the job. From what I have seen off the thermostat, temp has consistently been 76-78.

Its 5 watts per gallon. 4 degree temp change can be fatal.

The heater I have has an automatic thermostat so it is not running constantly. Water temp has maintained between 76-78, no more no less. Think that is Ok or should I consider changing?

I would get a 15 watt. Fish are pretty sensative to temp change.

They have a thermostat Chocolate. I know you're trying to be your helpful self. I'm sure they will monitor their tank very closely.

I bet Otis loves his place! He's super cute!

But the fish could cook in a heater for a tank 3 times the size.

Maybe just get one of those thermometers that have the suction cup you can stick to your tank from the inside? Those ones have had the best temp reading for me.

Getting a 15 watt would be the safest. My 50 watt keeps my ten gallon at a steady 80F in my ten gallons.
