Need help with Filter Media

I'm currently building a custom fish tank to house 4 Betta's. Its going to be filtered so i went to Petco tonight to pick up some Carbon but when i got there i had a quite a few choices. My Fluval uses both Carbon and Biomax (which i assume is their crappy idea of biological filtration).

So my question is which of these would you reccomend?

Thanks

Don't use carbon at all. It does indeed do a good job of taking odours, heavy metals or residual meds out of the water, but it also removes essential minerals, and will start to leech particles into the water if you leave it in for too long without replacing it. It can cause hole-in-the-head disease because of this. Replace the carbon with more Biomax, porous ceramic (the smooth ceramic rings are totally useless), sintered glass or filter floss.

Yup! Simple as that - pure biological filter, no carbon.

This is my personal opinion (after reading some articles on the topic), though, and others may beg to differ. Some people really like using carbon in their tanks and others don't. It does help with "that fishy smell", but there shouldn't be that strong of a smell in the first place if your tank maintenance is up to scratch.

Hmm, this makes things a little tough for me. My filter won't disrupt the surface of the water and without oxygen I wont be able to grow the BB i need to cycle the tank correctly
