Why Is This Tank So Small?

I went to Walmart and at the fish isle I saw a tank for bettas that was .3 gallons!! Why do people think bettas don't need room to swim? I also saw one that was .5 gallons. I would ban small tanks and sue the guys who made them!

When I pointed out those tiny cube tanks to my not very fish knowledgeable husband he asked, "What is that supposed to be, a Betta prison?"

Your husband sounds like mine! Lol I was under the impression he had little interest in my fish but then he shocked me by bringing home more silk plants to replace some old ones bc he read about how fragile their fins can be!

The tiny bowls make me sick too. They are hardly bigger than the cups the bettas come in!! I wish there was a sensible way to end their production.

Its not even so much the size itself that bugs me but how fast toxic waste builds up in that size, even with a bioload as small as a bettas. Thats like living in a half-bath that you poop and pee in and you cant flush the toilet! Yuck!

Though they are not ideal for people who want bettas as pets, those small tanks do come in handy for other reasons.. such as hospital tanks and tanks to keep breeders in, or juveniles when separating from a spawn. I use 32oz cups, and my tanks holding my breeders in (except for ones I am growing out) are all under a gallon. Also placing a couple females in 1/4g containers to stop their growth. I don't suggest them for pets though, as a lot of people don't want to have to do the frequent water changes needed in them. And normally don't have the set up/way to properly heat them. But having a small tank of a gallon or under can come in handy when a sick fish needs treatment/isolation.

Those under a gallon designer tanks can cost $10-20. I don't think a breeder would buy them to hold stock when they can use something cheaper.

Why would you want to stop a female's growth?
