Possible rescue

So the husband has maybe decided on rescuing one betta from walmart because he saw how bad they were and knows they won't last much longer in the awful brown water.

Cash is a bit limited but I already have a heater, 20g, cover, light. Not much else. My filters are on my 55 until I get a bigger one for that.

Ideas for cheap things to put in there? Was thinking one overturned terracotta pot and if they have any silk plants (they used to years ago..). Not sure if this is gonna happen tonight (kind of bribed him to consider it :P )

I just figure even if it's an hour it's better than being in that cup at the darn store, right? I won't be able to provide the best home for a little rescue but if I can save just one... >_<

Filter,heater,gravel,silk plants,terra cotta pot. All you need. Make sure the terra cotta pot doesn't have jagged edges which can tear fins.

Luckily for you, bettas don't need a filter. They also don't need substrate.

For the 20g without a filter you will want to be doing 50% water changes per week, with 1 100% per month. Make sure to siphon out the waste on the bottom - either with a siphon made for aquariums, or you can also use a turkey baster if money is tight.

You can use a lot of things for decorations - soft plastic plants to silk plants. Ceramic items, even glass items as long as they aren't broken.

He *may* feel scared at first being in a larger tank and if you don't have a lot of decorations at first. You can help relieve that stress by just lowering the water. Or he may just love the large space - just keep an eye on him and see how active he is, that will help give you an idea whether or not he likes the size. Give him a few days though first before you remove water to make sure it's not just him needing to adjust to the new tank first.

Quick question, how much do the betta at walmart cost anyway? Never actually seen a price tag.

If you talk to a manager, you can get a veil for about $1.50 and a crown for about $2.50.

Unfortunately the company changed it's pay schedule so we've got very, very limited funds. But I know those fish will be dead in days so I'll do my best. The fact that it bothers my husband as well who is usually pretty removed from empathy is proof enough for me.
