Yesterday, he got a water change and some decor moved around. I thought maybe we would "bond" and I would win him over. Not so much. He still flares a lot of the time when I go near him. So it looks like his true personality is showing. I guess I'll take it as a compliment that he's comfortable in his tank and just protecting it...lol.

He's officially earned the name Darth Revan. A Star Wars character that was once good and then turned bad...lol

Excessive flaring can cause his tail to rip in half sometimes, though, but if that happens it will heal with clean warm water in a few days. I'm thinking he will calm down like mine did after a few days.
They are Territoral theres a difference.

LOL! I love it when they get all dominant and flare. ;) My oldest guy used to flare at my laptop when I'd work in front of his tank...he'd see his reflection in the black and flare and flare and flare... :)

I agree with some of the others, he might actually be saying hello, or some version thereof. :) If he learns that when he flares he gets food, he may be doing it for food, just like a dog will sit and expect a treat.

All of mine live in divided tanks, and they flare at each other throughout the day, but if one leaves for a hospital tank, the remaining fish gets very depressed and lonely. I know that flaring is a dominance thing...but sometimes I wonder if they're not "play fighting" and interacting through it as well. :) Which could be what your guy is doing with you. :)

Sometimes Splash flares at me but it seems like he's doing it in a way to say hello or trying to show off or get my attention.

I have a 10 gal and have thought about dividing it but I am worried one will find a way to sneak over.

Hahahaha, that's so funny! I love his name, very fitting. Maybe that's just how he greets you?

My little guy just makes a beeline towards me when I walk over to him. XD But maybe that's just because he's hoping to get some food...
