flaring isn't ALWAYS a sign of aggression, it's part of betta "etiquette" for a number of purposes, it's basically like him saying "look at me!"

if he really disliked or feared you, he would try to make himself LESS visible (hiding, striping up, clamping fins) rather than more visible.

Is there plenty of hiding spots?

There are 3 "houses". 1 big rock that has 3 ways in/out. 1 small pass through rock and a ceramic triangle house that's really dark and he uses all of them. He doesn't try to hide from me at all. If he is resting when I come up to the tank he quickly swims to the front of the tank, starts doing darting laps and flaring when he gets back to me.

I guess it's a good thing because when and if he ever gets sick and isn't acting like a show off I'lll know something is wrong.

It would be interesting to have plants growing from the lid.

Lol when I first got my betta Ferdinand(may he rest in peace)he was super docile, then I held a mirror up at him and he flared for the first time. After that he flared at everything

If you get anything near mine's tank he'll flare up. Then I put the cat near it (it's high up so she can't get to it unless I'm holding her) and he was completely calm, even flipped his tail a little as if to say hello. One strange fish I've got.
