Closer to a gallon. It leaves only about 4" up and down space with the slits - which isn't bad.

The only concern I would have is that the water will evaporate quickly, so you will have to keep a close eye on the heater to make sure that it stays completely submerged.

If it weren't for those slits, I'd say it would be a fun tank for a betta.

I think I may get one for my two females and divide it somehow. I think it would be nice for them. They both appear to be healthy and ready to leave their temp tanks.
