NovAqua Plus is a good conditioner. Amquel plus like.. claims to detoxify nitrites and nitrates in case of a cycle break down. I wouldn't use it, or just keep it around for emergencies if you like. Just keep up on water changes and the same thing will occur without adding more chemicals. I've heard people claim their smooth skin and invertebrates died suddenly after using it, and I've also read reports of it really messing up ph, but I really have no experience with it and I don't know if those claims can be trusted.

Callistra- I think what you have heard about Amquel is TOTALLY true. Sadly.
But I blame hubby on this one.
It makes me feel slightly monstrous.
thank you, m'am :)

I wish I could post photos on a thread instead of bettafish profile album so I could show you what all I have. This betta stuff is more difficult than goldfish! It is a wonder my Solomon Finch has survived me!
PS...Probably because he is the most awesome fish in the world.

Really? I have Amquel Plus but haven't noticed any ill effects on my inverts. Then again, I don't use it in place of water changes. I have ammonia in my tap (and not all tanks have filters) and every single time I use PRIME - within hours I will find holes in my fish. Plus I can't handle the smell of it.

I might test out the PH claim. Set up a cup - test the ph, add amquel plus and test it every 12 hours or so for a few days.

OK, so I put some water in a cup. Then I tested the PH. It was a 6.2
Then I added Amquel plus and tested again - still 6.2

So directly after adding amquel plus did not change the PH reading AT ALL.
I will test the water from the same cup again in several more hourse to see if anything changed.

Thanks for the tests. Good to know. That's also very acidic/soft water. It's abnormal for ph to be so low to begin with. Maybe it's different with harder water.

Is that just your tap water with a ph so low?
