How long have you been in "fish keeping"?

A little over 20 years for me. My first tank was a standard 20 gallon. I now have 6 tanks running (135 gal, two 55 gallons, a 20 long, a 10 gallon and a 1 gallon) with everything from a betta to large, aggressive American cichlids. It's a very addicting hobby.

I have been betta caretaker for a 1 year and 2 months (my first one is still alive, too. ) I have approximately 2 yrs+ of fish keeping experience. I first started with aquatics with a dwarf albino african clawed frog.

I've had tanks continuously since I was 18 and in college, so that's 15 years. Bettas I've only liked for a few months now.


For most of those 15 years though I was pretty ignorant of proper fish care. I've really only gotten into it big time over the last year or so. I've gone through a lot of goldfish and related fish, and now have a 55gal tank with otos, guppies, skirt tetras, and bosemani rainbows. I also have a 20g betta sorority and a lone giant HMPK (baby) in a 10g in the kitchen. I do lots of water changes - payback for all those years when I didn't do enough!

Well when I was young around 8-9 we had the stock standard goldfish in a 3ft tank. I was obsessed with fish and used to draw pictures of fish and fish stores etc.

Fast forward a couple of years and our goldfish had died and I went with my birthday money to a (bad) fish store and twice got extremely poor and expensive advice. That turned me completely off fish keeping for years as I felt terrible constantly killing off my fish.

When I was 20, my dad moved to Canberra and left his goldfish with me. That was enough to get me back into fish and so I have around three years of actual experience now that I am 23. Thankfully, I am a lot better at keeping my fish alive this time around thanks mainly to the easy accessibility of the internet.

It's why I think in this day and age there is no real excuse not to do research before you go out and buy.

I feel sorry for the goldfish in the living room and all the Bettas I have ever had except Carter.

I am hoping for marine Guppies someday. Or maybe Brackish. I am very curous about it. But sadly I cant get a saltwater. I am too new.
