Healthy fishes are active, alert, and have beautiful bright colors. Don't get any that look weak, thin, and make sure there is no floating white poop. That means internal parasites. Petsmart usually has methylene blue in their betta cups to prevent disease so I think you should bring in a little flashlight. It will also check for Velvet or Ich.

I'm thinking about purchasing a female breeding them eventually, but for now, two is all I'm gonna get.

Really, are you sure? Breeding is a huge commitment.
You can easily get up to 300+ babies in a good spawn. Which means over 300+ babies to give away for home! You'll need over 100 jars for aggressive males and females. The breeding supplies are endless... Conditioning, spawn tank, fry foods, extra supplies like heaters and filters, grow-out tanks, shipping supplies, you'll probably need a fish room! If you're this new to betta-keeping, I don't think you should breed. It's a time-consuming passion and the costs can easily go over $500.
Research, research, research!! There are many methods as well..

What I'm trying to say is, don't go into something that you didn't really think about. I'm not trying to make you not breed, but it's a very time and money thing. There are also so many domestic bettas in this world, there isn't much room for bad breeders. I know Bryana is young, around 11? I'm 11 too. () Yeah, I sound old but I'm really not. lol I want to breed, too but I need to move out and what would my parents think? What about yours? It's just a dream for me when I'm older and more room..

Just breed when you know it's in a good time for money and time, okay? And you even said something about so many projects and HW, is it really time to even think about breeding? This isn't to discourage you, I just don't want anyone to waste money and time on breeding fish that are already sick in stores.

Thanks for the tips on breeding! I'm not thinking about doing it any time soon. I'm certainly gonna wait untill I'm more experienced. And my boys both are doing good in day two of staying at their new home!
