Oooo, be carefule with a group of Neons that small. I tried that in my 10gal with my VT. They were fine for a while, but eventually they became fin nippers! People on here told me they need to be in groups of 5-6 minimum, but I didn't want to risk it, so I rehomed the Neons. Keep us updated on how they do once you have them okay?

Dr. Tim's pure ammonia is available from Dr. Tim's website or from Amazon or from Drs. Foster and Smith.

It's a little pricey. But remember, you'll only ever have to cycle one tank. From then on you'll have live nitrifying bacteria to seed any other thanks you may start.

You can get an API liquid test kit from Amazon and, for free shipping, get your ammonia.

and i don't shop online so i guess i just shouldn't do the Ammonia way, or try to find an Ace hardware somehwere..........

yah i've had the neons for a week now and they seem all pretty good. i've been looking REALLY hard for that decent price 10gal with LED lights :) once i get the perfect tank i will buy 2 more tetras :D

Live plants may help boost the Cycling process. Be careful of Neon Tetra Disease.

Neons can sometimes become nippers, especially when kept in less then the minimum for a proper school(5-6), but often still in a smaller school they'll get bold and start nipping after a while. But a lot of people also keep them with bettas very successfully, so its really a hit or miss.
Backup plans are always a good idea. ;)

Anyway, if you really can't order online/have a parent order for you, do some google searching for an Ace Hardware around your area.
If there is absolutely no way for you to get your hands on some pure ammonia...you could either take the risk of the shrimp/fish food method and jut hope it works out, or you may have to do a fish-in with the fish you already have. Provided you keep up with the water changes and test once or twice a day, your betta should be fine, but neons are sensitive....they don't do well in unestablished tanks.

If you end up having to go with fish-in, add in some hardy live plants if you can to help a little with the water quality.

Regardless of the cycle method you end up with, it may not hurt to give a bottled bacteria like Tetra SafeStart or Seachem Stability a try. Its a bit of a hit or miss, but I've head of several accounts where they have helped to boost the cycle a little for people.

You do realize you use fish OR ammonia.. you don't dose tanks with ammonia that have fish in them..
